Much of Lancashire housing stock came out of the cotton years, and it shows in the walls. Stone and solid brick terraces through Preston, Blackburn and Accrington have no cavity, deep window reveals and chimney breasts that project further into the room than anything built since. Fixings behave differently in solid stone than in a modern stud wall, and a carcass cut square off site will sit proud at one end unless it is scribed to the wall in the room itself.

The county is not one type of house, though. Chorley and Leyland are largely interwar semis with regular alcoves and standard ceiling heights, while the Ribble Valley towns of Clitheroe and Whalley run to larger stone properties where a full wall of wardrobes is often the right answer rather than a pair of alcove units. We measure each room on its own terms and design from those measurements, not from a catalogue of standard widths.
