A converted mill or a new build apartment usually has no chimney breast, no alcoves and no obvious run of wall, and the partitions are plasterboard on a metal frame rather than masonry. That changes how a wardrobe is fixed. We span the load across the frame properly rather than hanging weight off a skin of board, and we build to the ceiling because floor space in a flat is the expensive part.

The Victorian and Edwardian streets through Didsbury, Chorlton, Withington and Levenshulme are a different job again. Those houses have generous ceiling heights and proper alcoves, but the walls are rarely plumb and the floors often fall towards the bay. In a conversion or a listed mill building there can also be restrictions on fixing into original fabric, which is worth raising at the design visit rather than discovering on fitting day.

Do you fit furniture in Manchester city centre apartments?

Yes, and it is a large part of our Manchester work. Access, lift bookings and building management rules all need arranging in advance, so tell us at the design visit and we will build that into the schedule.

Can you fit wardrobes where there is no alcove?

Yes. Most modern apartments have no alcove at all, so we design a full run along the best available wall and finish it with end panels so it reads as built in rather than as a box pushed against plaster.

Will fixings hold in a plasterboard partition wall?

Not on their own, which is why we do not rely on them. We locate the metal or timber studs behind the board and fix into those, spreading the load so a fully loaded wardrobe is carried by the structure and not the board.
