The single most common job we quote in Wigan is a pair of alcove wardrobes either side of a chimney breast. It looks like a symmetrical problem and it almost never is. Older Wigan housing was built quickly and in volume, and the two recesses typically differ by anything from a few millimetres to several centimetres. Two identical shop bought units will leave a visible gap down one side. We measure each recess separately, at three heights, because the walls lean as well.

A good deal of Wigan housing also has had the chimney breast taken out at some point, often only in one room, which leaves a wall that is flat at the bottom and stepped higher up where the stack is still supported above. That is entirely workable but it has to be measured properly. Out towards Standish and Shevington the plots are more generous and the 1930s semis have deeper bedrooms, which usually means a full wall of wardrobes makes more sense than an alcove pair.

My chimney breast was removed upstairs only. Can you still fit wardrobes?

Yes, and it is a common situation locally. The remaining step higher up the wall simply becomes part of the design, with the carcass built around it so the doors still line through.

Are alcove wardrobes cheaper than a full wall?

Usually, because there is less material and less door. But it is worth pricing both at the design visit, since a full wall often gives considerably more storage for a smaller difference than people expect.
